11/2/'12 : AYRSHIRE DISTRICT LEAGUE
LUGAR BOSWELLTHISTLE 1 KILWINNING RANGERS 3

Serious questions need to be asked of the relevant authorities about the standard of refereeing in the District League after a performance of breathtaking incompetence by the match official on Saturday at Rosebank.

Barely ten minutes in referee Calum Scott awarded Kilwinning a penalty after a collision between Allan Paul and Ben Lewis in which, if anything, the defender appeared more sinned against than sinning. After Carlo Walker was booked for protesting the award, Michael Hart placed his spot-kick well beyond 'keeper Lee Thompson but the ball struck the base of the post, rebounding to Hart who headed the ball into the net. Despite the fact that no one other than Hart had touched the ball after he hit the penalty, the referee gave a goal thus betraying a startling ignorance of the laws of the game. Thompson's efforts to re-educate the official merely earned him a yellow card as well.

Actually Buffs might have been ahead in the first minute when Thompson fluffed a kick-out but redeemed himself by saving Lewis's shot at goal. The 'keeper saw further action when he blocked a Bruce McMaster effort from Lewis's low centre.

With 23 minutes played, however, another refereeing howler allowed Lugar to draw level. A pass out of defence found Scott Leonard at least three yards offside but no whistle sounded and the former Maybole player ran in to notch his first goal for the Bunnets.

The remainder of a very close first half produced little goalmouth action with Buffs' best efforts being long range shots from Hart and Lee Grant that flew over the top. For Lugar, Leonard tested the 'keeper with a 20-yard drive, then a looping cross from Martin Reilly was headed wide by Chris Todd.

The second half was just as tight as the first with even the yellow card count tied at one apiece, Allan Paul and Roland Fabiani being the offenders. Thompson dealt with a hanging cross from Gary Russell then Neil Shearer headed over from a corner. Ian McCreadie headed a cross from Mark Ferris wide but Lugar came close when sub Steven Nisbet fired wide from the corner of the box. Shearer had to head a cross from Scott McIntyre behind for a corner but as the home side began to tire on the sticky surface, the visitors grabbed two late goals to seal the points.

In the 81st minute the home defence failed on several occasions to clear a hopeful ball into the box and McCreadie eventually blasted it into the net from six yards. Shearer seemed determined to engage in a dispute with the Lugar bench after the goal but this was completely ignored by the official who probably wouldn't have noticed if the Red Army had been massing its tanks on the touchline.

Three minutes from time, as Lugar pushed forward. Buffs broke down the left and Hart crossed to the far post where Lewis gave Thompson no chance with a low shot. The final score may have flattered George Grierson's side but the major talking point remained the performance of the referee which could have provoked serious problems although, thanks to the discipline of the players, it did not.

14/1/'12 : AYRSHIRE DISTRICT LEAGUE
ARDEER THISTLE 2 LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 1

Lugar's depressing run continued with a narrow defeat in a largely featureless encounter at Stevenston's old Rec park.
Ardeer certainly created far more chances than the visitors in the first half and had the ball in the net in the opening minutes when Daryl Kean sliced a shot across the face of goal and David Carberry netted at the far post only for referee Craig Walker to signal for offside. A shot from Greg Kean wasn't too far off the mark and it took both Ross Paul and Carlo Walker to block successive shots from John Colligan. Lugar 'keeper Jonathan Lopez kept his side on level terms when he got fingers to a Greg Kean drive and diverted the ball over via the top of the crossbar.  Lugar made little of the possession that they had although Scott Clelland managed a decent shot off Scott McIntyre's corner. Clelland also created an opening for Tyler Campbell but his attempted lob failed to trouble goalkeeper Scott Cochrane. Ardeer retained the upper hand and a break from defence provided Colligan with an opening that was swiftly closed by Simon Lindsay's challenge. Daryl Kean headed a Greg Kean free over the bar then the latter showed some skill in beating Paul but the shot lacked conviction. Stewart Fulton picked up a booking for a foul on Colligan as Thistle continued to press and with two minutes left of the half the home side made the breakthrough from the penalty spot. A penetrating run by Carberry was ended by Walker's sliding tackle which resulted in a penalty and a yellow card for the defender. Colligan dispatched the spot-kick to the bottom corner to give his team a deserved half-time lead.

If the first half had provided a less than riveting spectacle, the second managed to surpass it for turgid tedium. Ten minutes in, though, Ardeer produced one good move down the left when David Thomson played the ball inside to Greg Kean and he squared it across the face of the goal for Colligan to tuck a shot past Lopez and put Thistle 2-0 ahead. From the restart Mark Gilmour hit a shot from just inside the Ardeer half that caught Cochrane off his line but the ball struck the junction of post and bar thus sparing the goalkeeper's blushes. Bookings for Greg Kean and Derek Gemmell would not have worried the home side but the next booking, after 79 minutes, when Kevin Ramsay went in with raised studs, also gave Lugar a way back into the game via the penalty spot. Clelland blasted in the spot-kick but Ardeer easily negotiated the remaining time to secure the win. The referee only allowed one minute of stoppage time but it is doubtful whether Lugar would have managed an equaliser even if the official had decided to play until dark.

7/1/'11 : AYRSHIRE DISTRICT LEAGUE

IRVINE VICTORIA 3 LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 1

Lugar's first competitive match in seven weeks turned out to be something of a disappointment on a blustery day at Cochrane Street.

Vics passed up an early opportunity when Robert Colligan fired wide from close range, then Ben Carson was unable to capitalise on an error by Jonathan Lopez as he too sent the ball past the post. Lugar's Mark Gilmour sent a free kick just over the bar, and a Scott Clelland shot fizzed wide as the visitors hit back.

Darren Russell caused some hilarity with his protests about being booked for a rugby tackle on Lugar's Tyler Campbell, and the home side picked up another caution within a minute when skipper Ian Seymour hit the deck early as Lopez dived at his feet on the edge of the box.

The Fullarton team forged ahead, however, in the 27th minute when Kevin Adam beat the 'keeper to a cross from the left and knocked the ball into the net. Lopez did well to hold a Carson drive, and David Anderson headed a corner from Carson over the bar as the home side looked to press home their advantage.

They were stunned, however, in the 33rd minute when Gilmour ran on to a pass from midfield and cleverly drew the 'keeper before chipping the ball over him to level the scores.

Had Lugar held out until the break they might have been able to take something from the game but despite a smart save from Lopez that denied Adam a second goal, the defence cracked again in the 45th minute when Steven McAvoy got on the end of a cross from Anderson on the left wing and sent the Westenders in 2-1 up at half-time.

The third quarter of the match produced little meaningful action at either end although Vics retained the territorial advantage. Gilmour had picked up a harsh booking for a foul on Stef Johnstone and after the break the names of his team mates Allan Paul and Clelland joined his in referee Graham Stewart's book. Clelland's dissent was perhaps understandable as he protested the award of a 75th minute penalty after half-time sub Steven Nisbet was deemed to have pushed Seymour - the same Seymour who had been cautioned earlier for simulation. Perhaps the official thought it would have been folly to take another dive but, in any case, Seymour's persistence was rewarded when he blasted in the spot kick himself, giving his team a two-goal advantage that they never looked like relinquishing.

Lugar substitute Liam Walker made a couple of forceful runs into the Victoria box but on the first occasion his tempting cutback found no takers while on the second he went for goal himself but missed the target.

Lugar's miserable second half was complete when Clelland was shown a second yellow card for downing the seemingly fragile Seymour but the truth is that a rusty-looking Lugar team never created the chances necessary to take even a point from this game.

CRAIGMARK BURNTONIANS 1 LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 1

Craigmark were within touching distance of their first win of the season only to have it snatched away from them in the dying minutes.

The visitors made the better start and a deep cross from Scott Clelland flew just beyond Stewart Fulton, then 'Mark goalkeeper Paul Robertson dived to parry a shot from Scott McIntyre who hit the rebound over the bar. A Stephen Nisbet cross from the right was met by Kris Stewart but the ball was deflected away for a corner.

The home side responded with a shot from Ally McGaw that 'keeper Ally McGhee dived to hold. McGhee was put under pressure by a poor back-pass from Allan Paul but scrambled the ball away for a corner from which Tony Balfour tested the 'keeper with a low drive.

Lauchlan Millar was booked for felling Dom Boyle, and Steven Glass fired wide as 'Mark stepped up the pressure. That pressure paid off after 33 minutes when Balfour blasted a shot from the left edge of the box into the far corner of the net.

Balfour saw his next effort held by McGhee at the second attempt, and the 'keeper had to dive at the feet of Bryan Patterson to keep his team in contention as the half drew to a close.

The second half was, for the most part, a catalogue of misplaced passes, mistimes tackles and yellow cards. Craigmark players Boyle, Gaw and sub Graham Smith all got on the wrong side of referee David Dickinson while Lugar's Paul and substitute Donald Elstob also went into the book.

Craig Reid of the home side tried an audacious shot at goal from half-way that wasn't too far off target but his goalkeeper Robertson gave new manager Lawrie Coughtrie palpitations with a "Gonny-no-dae-that" moment when he rushed from his goal only to lose possession by the corner flag. Fortunately for him, his defence covered for him on that occasion,

Colin Aitken had a shot pushed wide by McGhee and, on the hour, the Lugar 'keeper was relieved when he lost out in an aerial challenge with Balfour but, as the ball entered the net, the referee blew for a foul on the 'keeper.

Danny Carroll set up a chance for Reid but James McLauchlan and McGhee between them kept Lugar from disaster. Stephen Holland ballooned a shot over the bar from six yards off Patterson's corner, and Balfour then robbed Paul only for McGhee to rush out and block the shot.

Craigmark were to pay dearly for these missed chances as, with 87 minutes played, Mark Gilmour sent over a free kick from the left and diminutive sub Lex Sharpe floated a header into the top corner to level the scores.

Lugar's equaliser from Lex Sharpe loops over the Craigmark keeper.

Even so, a stoppage time "Hail Mary" gave the Burnton boys one final chance to bag the win but, with only the 'keeper to beat, Balfour blew it by blazing over the bar from six yards.

CRAIGMARK BURNTONIANS - Robertson, Boyle, Collins, Holland, Gaw, McCulloch, Reid, Glass, Balfour, Aitken, Patterson.

KILWINNING RANGERS 3 LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 1

Ten-man Lugar deserved better than to lose by a two-goal margin to a Kilwinning side that will need to improve if promotion is to become a reality.

There were just seven minutes on the watch when Buffs were gifted the lead by some awful Lugar defending. No one took responsibility  for clearing an aimless looking ball out of defence and Ben Lewis could hardly believe his luck as he took the ball past the hopelessly stranded goalkeeper to tap the ball into the net.

Lugar bounced back just two minutes later when a ball over the top found Kris Stewart on the edge of the box and he deftly lobbed it over goalkeeper Ross Lundy for a well-taken equaliser.

Parity lasted just sixty seconds though, as in Rangers' next attack Lugar 'keeper Ronnie Davis failed to hold a cross from the left and Michael Hart was on hand to knock in the loose ball.

Lugar caught a rare break when Carlo Walker appeared to handle a bouncing ball in the six-yard area but referee Joseph McCaig waved away the home side's appeals. A Colin Frye corner was headed just over the top by veteran defender Neil Shearer, and Bruce McMaster went even closer with a header that bounced off the top of the bar. Lewis looked offside as he set up a chance that McMaster squandered and Allan Paul earned a booking for his protests about that.

Although Lugar created few chances, they were well in contention throughout and Buffs themselves posed few threats after the break. Lewis shot wide when one-on-one with Davis then the 'keeper made a fine double save to keep out a header from Dave Smith then McMaster's follow-up shot. McMaster then sent a dangerous cross to the far post where Hart, from barely a yard out, contrived to miss the target.

A fairly routine run-in between Stuart Hannah and Lugar striker Stewart led to yellow cards for both and, as Stewart had been booked in the first half for a swipe at Shearer, his game was over. The visitors dug in, however, and for a time looked the better side. Scott Clelland of Lugar was booked for a vociferous penalty claim then Smith of Buffs was cautioned for a diving in with both feet, and Hannah saw yellow for clattering Clelland.

The card that ex-Lugar man Hart was shown for an egregious piece of simulation might well have had "5.9" written on it but in the closing minutes Buffs finally made the extra man count. Sub Mark Ferris ended a run down the left with a cross that clipped the bar and, with ninety minutes played, Buffs made the points safe when Lewis sent a cross from the right to the far post where Hannah rammed in the final goal of the afternoon.

KILWINNING RANGERS - Lundy, Smith, Hannah, Grant, Shearer, Fabiani, Frye, Russell, Hart, Lewis, McMaster.
Substitutes : Ferris, McMurtrie, McCreadie, Deeny, McDowall, Robertson, McGhee.
LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE - Davis, Uppal, Gilmour, Walker, Paul, Millar, Nisbet, Clelland, Stewart, Sharpe, McIntyre.
Substitutes : Gibson, Baird, McLauchlan, Fulton, Elstob, McCurdy.

5/11/'11 : AYRSHIRE DISTRICT LEAGUE
LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 1 MUIRKIRK 2

There may not have been too many Bonfire night pyrotechnics but this turned out to be an absorbing encounter which in the end produced a fair result.

The visitors went off like a rocket at the start and home 'keeper Ronnie Davis was called on to save a Josh Muir header off Craig Duff's cross then Muir saw a shot deflected wide, and minutes later he provided a cross that Martin Reynolds headed past the post. Muirkirk were being allowed too much time on the ball and Davis had to dive again to block a Muir drive from the edge of the area.

'Kirk 'keeper Ally McInnes did well to hold on to a cross from the right by Kris Stewart but it was the visitors who made their dominance count with a goal after 24 minutes. As Lugar yet again backed off the man in possession, Gary Patterson simply ran forward and from 25 yards blasted in a low shot to the goalkeeper's right.

Alan Baird showed good skill to get in a cross from the right that struck the outside of the post as Lugar sought to respond, then a poor first touch from Stewart spoiled an opening created by Perry Uppal.

Davis was in action again as he dived to hold a Reynolds header off Stuart Wark's cross but Lugar drew level with a goal after 39 minutes. From a deep position Baird hit a magnificent ball through the middle for Mark Gilmour and despite McInnes blocking his first shot, Gilmour followed up to slot in the equaliser.

Right on the half-time whistle Davis had to scramble again to keep out a real firecracker of an overhead effort from Jamie Aitken and Muirkirk continued to press after the break. The home defence which included Carlo Walker, Allan Paul and Lauchlan Millar certainly had plenty of experience to call on and it was needed as Aitken and Murray Johnston both came close to restoring Muirkirk's lead.

Lugar's best move came when Uppal played Stewart in but McInnes blocked the latter's shot. Davis was still the busier 'keeper, though, and performed well throughout holding dangerous free kicks from Johnston and Patterson.

Lugar players Millar, Paul and Steven Nisbet all saw yellow cards as Muirkirk exerted further pressure and they visitors should have regained the lead with a 77th minute penalty. The home defence was caught out by a through ball and as Davis came out to dive at Aitken's feet, the forward tumbled to the ground. Referee Calum Scott duly awarded the spot-kick and booked the 'keeper. Davis, however, pulled off his second penalty save in two games as Wark aimed straight down the middle and the goalkeeper was able not only to save but to hold on to the ball.

Within a minute, though, Lugar's hopes went up in smoke when Muirkirk broke from defence and, as the home team appealed for offside, Pat Lopez drew the 'keeper and passed to Wark who had all the time he needed to knock the ball into an unguarded net and complete 'Kirk's third derby win over Lugar this season.

LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE - Davis, Walker, McLauchlan, Millar, Paul, Nisbet, Uppal, Clelland, Baird, Stewart, Gilmour.
Substitutes : Sharpe, Gibson, Fulton, Elstob, McCurdy.
MUIRKIRK - McInnes, Lamont, Peden, Reynolds, Patterson, Muir, Aitken, Duff, Wark, Johnston, Lopez.
Substitutes : Hannah, Dale, McClelland, Wilson, Vause.

29/10/'11 : EMIRATES SCOTTISH CUP - ROUND 2
LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 1 STONEHOUSE VIOLET 2

Lugar exited the Scottish Cup with a limp performance against mediocre opposition at rain-soaked Rosebank.

Although Lugar's first attack was promising - a run down the left by Allan Baird and a cross that was just beyond Kris Stewart - Stonehouse soon took control. Craig Cavanagh passed to Smart Osodolor on the edge of the box and the former Irvine Vics player tested 'keeper Ronnie Davis with a low shot.
Graeme Brown then found Osodolor with a free kick and Davis this time pushed his shot on to the post. Lugar fought back and Mark Gilmour won a corner on the left from which Baird fired wide.Stonehouse remained on top, though, and Dougie Adair brought another diving save from Davis.
The visitors took a deserved lead in the 23rd minute when Alan Wilson hit a long ball through the middle of the threadbare Lugar defence and Adair ran in to score with ease.
Violet pushed on for a second goal and Joe Rae headed a deep cross from Brown into the arms of Davis, then the 'keeper was forced to kick clear a low centre from Osodolor.
Allan Paul replaced Perry Uppal on the half-hour as Lugar sought to patch up their unravelling defence, and the home side almost got back on level terms when Baird rattled a shot off the underside of the crossbar.
Stonehouse went 2-0 ahead in the 37th minute, however, when a long ball found Osodolor in a suspiciously offside position and although Davis parried his initial effort, the striker followed up to net the rebound.
Irvine referee David Ingram did blow for offside when Lugar's Ian McIntyre put the ball in the net but two minutes before the break the home side managed to pull a goal back. Goalkeeper Davis hit a long free kick upfield and the attempted clearance was picked up by Scott Clalland who skipped past the defenders, around the 'keeper and slipped the ball into the net from an acute angle.
The expected second-half revival never materialised, however, and Davis remianed the busier 'keeper, saving twice from Wilson.
Osodolor had already been cautioned for simulation and when he dramatically hit the deck again in the 63rd minute there was an expectation that he might be sent off but in fact a penalty was awarded. Justice was at least partly served, however, when Davis dived to his right to block Adair's spot-kick.
Lugar had few serious efforts on goal although a Clelland shot from the edge of the box troubled 'keeper Dan Terry, and Lex Sharpe put the ball into the side net following a corner kick.
There was a penalty claim too when sub Martin O'Connor seemed to divert a shot with his arm but in truth Lugar did not deserve a replay and Adair should have added to the winning margin when he pounced on an error by Carlo Walker but blazed his shot over the bar.

LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE - Davis, Fulton, McLauchlan, Walker, Uppal, McIntyre, Sharpe, Clelland, Stewart, Baird, Gilmour.
Substitutes : Elstob, Gibson, McGougan, Paul, McCurdy.
STONEHOUSE VIOLET - Terry, Brown, Patterson, Cuddihy, Craig, Rennie, Wilson, Rae, Adair, Cavanagh, Osodolor.
Substitutes : O'Connor, Hanley, Warren, McNicol, Dastry, Mullaney, Jenner.

22/10/'11 : AYRSHIRE DISTRICT LEAGUE
TROON 4 LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 0
Troon recorded a straightforward victory at windswept Portland Park against a Lugar side that rarely threatened the home goal. Troon's early dominance was such that they should have scored far sooner than they did.
Scott Chatham saw a shot blocked and Stephen Wilson fired the rebound over the bar. Darren Baird's shot was equally inaccurate after Chatham's delicate ball over the top had sent him through. A low shot from Dale Moore hit the side net then Jonathan Bailie headed a Wilson cross wide of the post.
Dougie Ramsay was next to miss from the edge of the box and when Andy Rae did get a shot on target, Ronnie Davis managed to block it with his foot. Lugar's only meaningful first-half effort was a shot from Mark Gilmour that went wide after Kris Stewart had created the opening. The home side finally took the lead in the 28th minute when a shot from distance by Ramsay slipped from Davis's grasp and dropped over the line. The big 'keeper seems to be suffering a crisis of confidence at the moment and there was an air of resignation about the home side's reaction to the error.

Bookings for Stewart, Scott Clelland and Allan Paul added to Lugar's woes but worse was to come after 41 minutes when former Lugar star Rae ran on to a through ball and sent a low shot past Davis to give Troon a two-goal advantage at the break.

Lugar might have hoped to use the wind to their advantage after the interval but, ten minutes in, Troon killed the game off with a third goal. With Ian McIntyre lying injured in the penalty area, Troon played on and Chatham passed to Dale Moore who dispatched a shot into the bottom right-hand corner. The visitors' protests fell on deaf ears and Troon's dominance was only accentuated by the departure of the injured McIntyre.

Lugar's inability to field a settled rearguard has contributed to the large "goals against" tally this season and Troon had further opportunities to add to their score. A slick move involving Neil Sanderson and Baird ended with a shot by Chatham that Davis saved with his foot, then Rae headed a Sanderson cross over the bar. Davis made a fine one-handed save from a Baird shot and Moore blasted a Sanderson cutback over the top.

Ten minutes from time Troon found the net again when sub Andy Roy ran down the right and moved the ball inside to Sanderson who capped a fine display with a quality goal.

Referee Stephen Graham showed yellow cards to Lex Sharpe of Lugar and Troon's Ramsay but in the dying minutes Moore's reaction to a foul by Clelland led to yellow cards for both and, as it was his second, an early bath for the Lugar skipper on a depressing day for the Jaggy Bunnets.

TROON - Leavy, Sanderson, Moore, McKay, Bailie, Cairns, Chatham, Ramsay, Rae, Baird, Wilson.

Substitutes : Smith, Roach, Menzies, Lyle, Morrison, Roy, Fraser.

LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE - Davis, Fulton, McLauchlan, McIntyre, A.Paul, Elstob, Sharpe, Clelland, Stewart, Nisbet, Gilmour.

LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 6 ARDEER THISTLE 1
Lugar finally got their Sat-Nav working and found the route to goal with an impressive win over their North Ayrshire rivals. But it was the visitors that started brightest and the first chance came via a free kick from the edge of the area, but Lugar’s wall held firm and  Paton’s kick was cleared. After a nervy start the Boswell settled and Mark Gilmour broke away down the left to send in a cross that was almost turned in for an own goal by Gemmell. Perry Uppal then came close with a header, but Ardeer’s keeper Scott Cochrane was well positioned to make a save. New signing Kris Stewart was proving to be a thorn in Ardeer’s side and he won a penalty when Gemmell brought him down in the 17th minute.
Lugar captain Scott Clelland took the responsibility and dispatched the spot kick to give Lugar their first league goal of the new season. Four minutes later and Lugar doubled their tally, Stewart again broke deep into the box and although his cut-back looked poor, no-one had spotted Clelland on the edge of the box and he rifled home for 2-0. Ardeer were now being restricted by a well marshalled Lugar defence and they were restricted to some long range efforts that never really tested Ronnie Davis in the Lugar goal. Lugar’s Gilmour, Uppal and Steven Nisbet all had chances but the half ended without any more goals.
The second half started and Lugar went immediately on the attack looking for the goal that would kill off Ardeer’s hopes of a recovery. Their efforts were rewarded when with 3 minutes played, Lugar were awarded their 2nd penalty of the game. Clelland again took charge and made no mistake as he secured his hat-trick. Lugar were rampant now and they added another 3 goals within the next 15 minutes to put the game beyond any doubt. Goals from Nisbet and then Stewart were closely followed by the goal of the game from Gilmour who latched onto a loose ball some 25 yards out and his well struck volley flew past a helpless Cochrane.
Lugar could have added to their score when in the 30th minute Scott McIntyre was bundled over in the box by Ardeer’s Niall Kennedy. Referee Adam Cairns however decided apparently that Lugar had scored enough and waved away all claims for another spot kick.
Ardeer were dealt a further blow when Derek Gemmell was given his marching orders following his second yellow card of the day. But they did however finish with a consolation goal. Kennedy took a free kick from about 30yards out and his superb kick sailed over Lugar’s wall into the top corner whilst Davis could only watch in admiration.

Final Score – Lugar Boswell Thistle 6 (Clelland 3, Nisbet, Stewart and Gilmour) Ardeer Thistle 1 (Kennedy)

20/8/'11 : AYRSHIRE DISTRICT LEAGUE
LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 0 ANNBANK UNITED 4
The scoreline looks bad but it wasn't until the last twenty minutes that Annbank managed to pull away from a dogged Lugar side that showed some improvement from the previous week.
The home side actually had the better of the first ten minutes with Ross Paul swinging in dangerous corner kicks from either wing. One of them led to a header from Danny Naismith that
was deflected wide while the other was held under the bar by Jordan Calligan.

Despite being on the back foot early on, the Bankies took the lead after 14 minutes when Duane Hyslop struck a 25-yard free kick into the postage stamp corner. Lugar were still well in touch though, and a long throw-in from Paul led to a handling error by Calligan which had to be retrieved by his defenders. Lugar were convinced they should have had a penalty when Kevin Burgess won a header by simply barging Steven Nisbet out of the way but referee Jordan Patterson saw no infringement.

The home side's injury problems continued with the departure of Adam Gibson and thereafter Annbank gradually gained the upper hand. Colin Kay gave Kevin Aitken the chance to shoot into the side net then Lugar 'keeper Ronnie Davis denied Michael O'Connor after Aitken had made the opening. Hyslop ended his powerful run with an effort that Davis saved well and the busy 'keeper dived bravely at O'Connor's feet to prevent him getting in a shot. The goalkeeper's heroics continued when, following a free kick, Alan Patterson's shot had to be pushed past the post by the diving Davis.
At the other end, Burgess's timely intervention prevented Lex Sharpe getting a shot at goal as the half drew to a close.

Goalscoring opportunities dried up for a while after the break although a fluffed clearance gave Annbank's Patterson a chance but Davis smothered the shot. Bankies' goalkeeper Calligan rarely looked comfortable and his blushes were spared by a clearance from Burgess after Calligan had spilled a Naismith free kick.

A swirling cross from Tommy Sloan struck Davis's right-hand post but goal number two eventually came in the 70th minute when O'Connor broke down the left and centred for Aitken to shoot past Davis. Ryan Kean then hit the bar with a header off a free kick and, as Lugar sought a way back into the game, Calligan held on to a shot from Scott Clelland.
The visitors put the result beyond doubt six minutes from time when Kean took a pass from O'Connor and hit a shot that was deflected into the net. In stoppage time, Sloan crossed from the left for sub Michael Reilly to side-foot in goal number four but Lugar will prefer to dwell on the first hour of this match rather than the way it ended.

LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE - Davis, McIntyre, Lindsay, Gall, Gibson, Paul, Nisbet, Clelland, Stewart, Sharpe, Naismith.
Substitutes : McLauchlan, Elstob, Waddell, Quail.
ANNBANK UNITED - Calligan, Rogers, Kean, Douglas, Burgess, Kay, T.Sloan, Hyslop, Aitken, O'Connor, Patterson.
Substitutes : Simpson, L.Sloan, Connolly, Reilly, Noble, Fisher.

13/8/'11 : AYRSHIRE DISTRICT LEAGUE
MAYBOLE 5 LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 0
For the first quarter of this match referee David Dickinson didn't get a single decision wrong. In the remaining three quarters, however, he barely got one right, and while Lugar can hardly blame the official for the defeat, his performance probably had something to do with the scale of it.
The first half-hour was fairly even with few chances created. Lugar 'keeper Ronnie Davis got down smartly to save a Scott Dempster shot at the base of the post then Alan Baird created an opening for the visitors when he slipped his marker on the right wing but his inviting cross found no takers. Dempster showed good skill on the edge of the box before sending a shot over the bar while, at the other end, Danny Naismith saw his header off Baird's corner deflected wide.
Lugar suffered a blow in the 23rd minute when the tricky Baird went off with what looked like a bad ankle injury and, as Maybole began to get on top, Lloyd Murphy had a shot whistle over the bar and then he came even closer with a header off a Greig Gallacher cross.
Maybole's breakthrough came courtesy of a poor refereeing decision in the 29th minute. Mark Gilmour's challenge on Dempster seemed both fair and outside the box but the official surprised even the home side by pointing to the penalty spot from where Murphy made no mistake.
That seemed to knock the stuffing out of the young Lugar side and Murphy bagged a second goal in the 37th minute when he skilfully turned his marker on the edge of the box, creating enough space for a shot that beat Davis low to his left. Darren Gall of Lugar had picked up a booking for dissent but the referee's eccentricities were apparent when an attrocious two-footed lunge by Steven Whiteside on Lugar sub Lex Sharpe brought only a yellow card yet, seconds later, Gilmour was booked for merely obstructing Maybole's Andy Boyle deep in the Maybole half.

The home side dominated after the break and a third goal had to come. It arrived in the 61st minute when a penetrating pass from John McDonald reached Dempster deep in the opposition box and his shot gave Davis no chance.
Three minutes later Lugar won a corner on the left after a good centre from Gilmour was intercepted by Whiteside. From the flag kick, however, 'Bole broke forward quickly and, with the Lugar defence stretched, Boyle fired home from the edge of the box.
Lugar captain Scott Clelland was the subject of another cheap booking for tripping Jo Maxwell before the scoring was completed five minutes from time when Murphy rifled in a 20-yarder to round off his hat-trick.
The visitors were denied even a consolation goal in the last minute when Clelland hit a free kick into the defensive wall and, from the rebound, a seemingly net-bound drive from Steven Nisbet was touched over the bar by home 'keeper Scott Johnstone.

LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 1 CUMNOCK 9
Cumnock needed to win this game by a barrow-load and hope that Muirkirk could do them a favour against Talbot but while the goal deluge did indeed materialise at Rosebank, the hope proved to be as forlorn as the rain-soaked Boswell players at the end who only just managed to keep the score in single figures.
It took twenty minutes for the first goal to arrive when Gary McMenamin ran on to a through ball from Chic Connolly and, although he appeared to control the ball with his hand, referee David Dunne saw nothing untoward and McMenamin fired into the corner of the net. Five minutes later, Lugar came close to a shock equaliser when a Steven Nisbet shot hit the underside of the bar and bounced clear. Cumnock's second goal came in the 34th minute when Pedram Ardallany sent over a deep cross form the right that McMenamin headed in at the far post.

Cumnock 'keeper Andy Kennedy had a scare when his attempted clearance struck Lex Sharpe but the ball ricocheted away from the target. Two goals in two minutes then put 'Nock on easy street. First, McMenamin secured his hat-trick with a 25-yard free kick to the top corner, then in the 41st minute Aaron Connolly beat the offside trap to run through and net goal number four.
Six minutes into the second half, Chris McKnight thumped in number five from Aaron Connolly's centre but Chic Connolly's luck was right out on two occasions when shots struck the underside of the bar only to be scrambled clear. Lugar sub Darren Gall almost capitalised on a defensive slip but Kennedy dived to save. The home side did get a goal back, however, after 68 minutes when Scott Clelland split the defence with a fine pass and Simon Lindsay ran in from the left to beat Kennedy with a low shot. Three minutes later, though, from a McKnight corner on the left, Graeme Wilson got ahead of his marker to shoot home at the near post, and in the 74th minute the same player headed in a cross from the right to make the score 1-7. Wilson completed a quick-fire hat-trick with an almost identical header in the 77th minute, although 'keeper Martin McCurdy might have expected to save that one.
McKnight then headed another cross into the net only to have the referee disallow the strike for offside but with five minutes remaining, McKnight had the final word with a shot from the left edge of the penalty box that gave McCurdy little chance. Cumnock can now hope that their goalscoring difficulties are at an end, while Billy McKie's men know the magnitude of the task ahead this season...although, fortunately, they won't have to face Super League opposition every week.

6/8/'11 : ARDAGH GLASS LEAGUE CUP - SECTION 4
LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 1 MUIRKIRK 3
After coming so close against Cumnock in midweek, Muirkirk notched up their first win of the season under cloudy skies at Rosebank.
The first half was as dull as the weather and was only enlivened by a 44th minute goal for the visitors and an early candidate for miss of the season.
Muirkirk had the better of the exchanges and Jamie Aitken set up a shooting chance for Murray Johnston but the ball flew over the bar. Their clearest opportunity came when Gary Paterson's head-flick sent Johnston away down the left and his centre found Stewart Wark unmarked in front of goal. It seemed easier to score than to miss but the striker somehow contrived to send his shot wide.

Aitken then headed wide off a long throw-in by Callan Lamont. Lugar's best moves involved Alan Baird and Mark Gilmour, with the latter sending a shot just over the bar from Baird's pass. Gilmour then sent Baird through but a fine recovery tackle by Jason Drury averted the danger. With just a minute left of the first half, Muirkirk made the breakthrough they probably deserved when Johnston got away again down the left and crossed to the far post where Josh Muir beat Ronnie Davis with a powerful header.

Within minutes of the restart, 'Kirk had a chance to score again when Aitken was upended in the box and Irvine referee David Ingram had no doubt it was a penalty. Davis earned a caution for his protests but the home skipper redeemed the situation by diving to his right to save Lamont's spot-kick.

Lugar's Danny Naismith was booked for a foul on Johnston and shortly thereafter Muirkirk went two up when Muir's pass was side-footed home by Aitken. The home side seemed to have found a way back into the game after an hour when Drury tugged at Baird's shirt in the penalty area. The referee deemed it a "last man" foul and the incredulous Drury was shown a red card. Naismith's poorly struck penalty posed few problems for Ally McInnes though, and the 'keeper saved comfortably.
'Kirk never looked to be a man short after this and when Davis failed to hold a Paterson free kick in the 72nd minute, Muir reacted first and bagged himself a tap-in for Muirkirk's third goal.
There were further bookings for Darren Gall and Chris McKie of Lugar but the home side eventually found something to cheer about in the 85th minute. The visitors only partially cleared a corner kick and the ball fell to Perry Uppal who dispatched a 25-yard shot into the bottom corner past the goalkeeper's left hand.
That reverse did little to take the shine off Muirkirk's win but Lugar's first goal of the season only served to indicate that after Perry's late strike the Only Way is Up, pal!

30/7/'11 : ARDAGH GLASS LEAGUE CUP : SECTION 4

LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 0 AUCHINLECK TALBOT 5

The Glorious Twelfth may still be some time away but the Scottish Cup holders expended some ammunition in bringing down Lugar's fledgling team even if it was not quite the turkey-shoot that many had expected.

Talbot certainly dominated from the off and Lugar 'keeper Ronnie Davis made a fine early save from a Graham Smith shot. Following a corner kick, Kenny Connolly hit a shot off the base of the post then Connolly played in Keir Milliken but a fine tackle from Adam Gibson thwarted the striker. Fifteen minutes in, however, the visitors took the lead when a deep cross from Smith on the right was headed in by Milliken.
Lugar lost Ross Norris to injury midway through the half but his replacement, Alan Murphy, showed some good close control whenever Lugar were able to move forward. A promising move down the Lugar right ended when Alan Baird beat his man neatly but he couldn't find a shot to match the lead-up work.

With 33 minutes played, Talbot added a second goal when a header from Ally Park in midfield drifted over the heads of the static home defenders, and David Gillies ran through to lob the advancing Davis in expert fashion. The half ended as it began with Davis defying the Talbot forwards as he beat out a powerful drive from Kieran Paterson and, although he was beaten by James Latta's follow-up header, the ball drifted wide of the goal.

Any Talbot complacency would have been banished early in the second half when Steven Nisbet ran on to a through ball and beat goalkeeper Brian McGarrity with a shot that came back off the crossbar. Warning taken, Talbot pushed forward and a Gillies shot flashed wide of the post then Davis produced a fine save to deny Paterson. The third goal duly arrived in the 62nd minute when Gillies headed a Liam McVey cross past Davis.

Referee Colin McAlpine will not have an easier game to control this season but he still felt the need to show Scott Clelland of Lugar a yellow card for something he said and, in fairness, he had warned him earlier. There were further chances for Talbot as Gillies headed a Milliken cross over the top then Davis dived to foil Smith. Lugar's best effort was a run down the left by Nisbet but his shot barely troubled McGarrity. The hot sun and the pressure began to tell on Lugar in the latter stages and the fourth goal came after 81 minutes when a Paterson shot appeared to be deflected into the net by Gillies. Any doubt about the Gillies hat-trick was dispelled two minutes later when the forward ran through the tiring defence to lob the ball over Davis and complete the scoring.

It was an easy victory for the visitors but, as one Talbot fan remarked, the 5-0 scoreline makes Lugar as good as Cumnock!
