15/10/'11 : WEST OF SCOTLAND CUP - ROUND 1

KELLO ROVERS 7 LUGAR BOSWELL THISTLE 3

(Played at Rosebank)

There were ten goals, as many yellow cards, and one red one in a hotly contested cup-tie where the favourites only pulled away in the final quarter.

Three minutes in, the Bunnets took the lead when a Steven Nisbet shot took a deflection on its way to the bottom right-hand corner of Cammy Menzies's goal.

Lugar continued to press and another Nisbet effort was diverted away from the target by Menzies.

Rovers replied with a long-range shot from Kieran Pagan that home 'keeper Ronnie Davis tipped over the bar. Kello's equaliser came after 21 minutes following a corner on the right. Scott Caldwell sent the ball back into the danger area via an overhead kick which was met by Steven Shankland who slipped the ball between the 'keeper's legs and over the line.

Lugar were dangerous on the break and Mark Gilmour set up a chance for Kris Stewart but the shot was off target. Following a free kick on the left, Scott Clelland drew a magnificent save from Menzies with a shot that was bound for the top corner. Rovers ended the half on the offensive, however, as Caldwell pounced on a loose ball and fired wide of the upright.

Adam Gibson's departure at half-time with a facial injury had its effect on the Lugar defence and Kello took the lead in the first minute of the second half. Shankland was left unmarked in front of goal and he headed in Pagan's cross from the left. Lugar were resilient, though, and drew level in the 56th minute when sub Allan Baird blasted an unstoppable shot into the top corner from the angle of the box.

Referee Craig Napier was as sharp with the cards as Brett Maverick and, having booked Kello's Martin Shaw for a foul on Clelland, he had no option but to send Shaw off for a similar lunge at Stewart.

The home defence suffered another blow when James McLauchlan went off injured and Rovers took full advantage with two goals in a minute. With 69 minutes played, Shankland bagged his hat-trick with a fierce shot from a seemingly impossible angle that beat the 'keeper at his near post.

In their next attack Kello sub David Jardine took a pass from Caldwell to hit goal number four and it seemed all over after 78 minutes when Shankland at the back post headed in Jardine's right-wing cross.

Three minutes after that, however, Lugar charged forward again and Lex Sharpe played in Baird, and although his chip over the goalkeeper came back off the post, Stewart followed up for a tap-in.

The visitors finally put the game to bed with two more goals in the last ten minutes. Caldwell ran on to a Shankland head-flick to score in the 83rd minute then two minutes from time Caldwell hit the final goal in a game where Rovers performed better with ten players than with eleven.
