Two
catastrophic goalkeeping errors robbed Lugar of any chance they had in this
match against a Maybole side that rarely looked like promotion contenders.
Straight
from the kick-off the Bunnets went on the attack and Scott Clelland gave Mark
Gilmour the chance to send in a cross that Craig Stevenson had to head away
from the advancing Kris Stewart. Lugar's domination couldn't last ninety
minutes but, in fact, it lasted little more than 90 seconds as Maybole took the
lead with their first attack. Chris Allan won a challenge with Allan Paul and
centred for Scott Irvine whose effort went in off the post although the home
fans were convinced he had handled the ball in the process.

Graeme Bunyan
almost added a second goal with a twenty-yard shot that Ronnie Davis pushed
over the bar but Lugar recovered from the early setback to equalise after 25
minutes. Steven Nisbet met a Gilmour cross from the left and although Scott
Johnstone dived to his left to push the ball away, the defence failed
to clear and Nisbet followed up to fire in a shot that deflected off a
defender's arm and into the bottom corner.

A break down
the right by Stewart almost brought more joy for the home side but the cross
flew just beyond Gilmour and away from the danger area. 'Bole fired back with a
driving run from midfield by Stuart McGrady although his parting shot was
wayward. Irvine then crossed from the right for Allan to get in a shot that
crept past the upright and Davis made a good save from Steven Morrison's
point-blank header after McGrady had sent over a dangerous free kick.
With
only a minute left of the first half, Maybole took the lead again when Davis
needlessly hurried an attempted clearance kick which struck Irvine and
presented the striker with the opportunity to take the ball past the 'keeper
and slide the ball into an unguarded net.
Ten
minutes into the second half Lugar's hopes were all but extinguished by a
second disaster for Davis. This time the 'keeper came to the edge of his box to
collect a high-bouncing but harmless looking ball from midfield but the ball,
made greasy by the constant rain, slipped from his grasp and dropped at the
feet of Allan who gratefully rolled it into the net. To compound the 'keeper's
misery, he was then shown a yellow card by referee David McKniff, presumably
for an expletive-laden reaction to his own error.
The
officious whistler seemed keen to eliminate all physical contact from the game
and flashed further yellow cards in the direction of Lugar's Allan Paul and
Nisbet as well as Maybole players Lloyd Murphy, Scott Dinwoodie and Scott
Dempster.
Allan
and Bunyan passed up chances to add to the score but the fourth goal did arrive
in the 87th minute when Irvine set up Bunyan whose strike gave the visitors a
winning margin that slightly flattered them.
